Political News:The All Ceylon Grama Niladhari Officers of Sri Lanka announce two-day strike and United Petroleum Signs BOI agreement to start operations in Sri Lanka.
1.President Participates in Sinhala and Tamil New Year Festivities Organized by the Nuwara Eliya Meepilimana Youth Club
The New Year celebrations held in Meepilimana, Nuwara Eliya, organized by the “Api Youth Club” in partnership with the Nuwara Eliya District Secretariat and the Nuwara Eliya Divisional Secretariat, took place today (14th). President Ranil Wickremesinghe graced the occasion with his presence.
Embracing age-old traditions, this festive celebration was a tapestry of traditional sports and cultural richness.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe arrived at the venue this morning and observed various New Year competitions. Additionally, he awarded prizes to the winners of the Bakmaha cycling contest held earlier in the day.
Interacting warmly with the residents of Meepilimana, the President engaged in cordial discussion during the New Year festivities.
Furthermore, during his interaction with the people, President Ranil Wickremesinghe pledged swift resolutions to the issues raised by the local community of Meepilimana.
Simultaneously, many local government institutions and people have organized many New Year celebrations across the island to celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
Compared to last year, more New Year’s celebrations have been organized this year.
2.National Oil Anointing Ceremony held under the patronage of PM
National oil anointing ceremony of Sinhala and Hindu New Year Festival was held today (15) at Wattala Hendala Purana Rajamaha Vihara under the patronage of Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena.
The Ministry of Indigenous Medicine organized this national event and on the auspicious time at 10.17 a.m., Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena was anointed by Ven Higgoda Chandima Nayaka Thera, Chief Incumbent of Wattala Hendala Rajamaha Viharaya.
The Maha Sangha anointed the people who have attended the state ceremony.
Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena presented a high-nutrition, high medicinal value Moringa plant to the Handala Purana Rajamaha Vihara Dayaka Sabha for planting on the auspicious time for tree planting that falls on 18th April.
The Prime Minister offered his best wishes to the people for their good health as expected from the oil anointing ceremony.
The ministry had taken steps to provide Sinhala New Year Almanac and Nanu that requires for the oil anointing ceremony to Indigenous Medical Practitioners and to all the temples.
State Minister of Indigenous Medicine Sisira Jayakody, State Minister Prasanna Ranaweera, MP Yadamini Gunawardena, government officials including Secretary to the Ministry of Health Palitha Mahipala and residents participated in this event.
3.New Governors appointed to Southern, North Western Provinces
President Ranil Wickremesinghe has appointed two new Governors for the Southern and North Western Provinces yesterday(02).
Accordingly, Mr. Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena took oath as the Governor of the Southern Province before President Ranil Wickremesinghe this morning while Mr. Nazeer Ahamed was sworn in as the Governor of the North Western Province.
Secretary to the President Mr. Saman Ekanayake was also present on this occasion.
4.Zahira College, Mawanella Donates 3.3 M to Gaza Children’s Fund
Mawanella Zahira College has contributed Rs. 3.3 Million to the Children’s Fund in Gaza, with the donation cheque being handed over to President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Ministry of Finance today (03).
The ceremony saw the presence of Senior Additional Secretary to the President and Secretary of the President’s Fund, Mr. Sarath Kumara, along with the Principal of Mawanella Zahira Vidyalaya, A. M. Nowshad. Representing the teaching staff S.M. Nawaz, and M. S. M. Nalim, as well as Secretary of the School Development Society, M. H. Rilaf Mohammed, Secretary of the Alumni Association, S. L Mohammed Rifkan, and M. S. M. Nilardeen also participated.
5.Grama Niladhari Officers Announce Two-Day Strike
COLOMBO (News 1st); The All Ceylon Grama Niladhari Officers Association announced a two-day strike from tomorrow (28).
Accordingly, members of the All Ceylon Grama Niladhari Officers Association will step away from their duties on Friday (28) and Saturday (29).
General Secretary of the All Ceylon Grama Niladhari Officers Association Jagath Chandralal said highlighted the need for increased travel allowances, fuel allowances, uniform allowances, and communication allowances. These allowances have remained unchanged since 2016.
The strike will take place in line with the Work To Rule campaign already launched by the Grama Niladhari Officers.
Many Grama Niladhari Offices remained closed today (27), as a result of the Trade Union action.
6.United Petroleum Signs BOI agreement to start operations in Sri Lanka
United Petroleum Lanka Pvt Ltd has entered into a contract on June 4th 2024 with Board of Investment of Sri Lanka (BOI) as part of the agreement signed in between Ministry of Power & Energy to supply Petroleum products in Sri Lankan Market.
This event came into live after selecting the company based on RFP issued by Sri Lankan government to further liberalizing the country’s retail petroleum sector early last year. United Petroleum Australia Pty Ltd is a leading Petroleum Trading company in Australia owning over 500 fuel stations all over Australian sub-continent. Company is owned by TWO Enterprising Entrepreneurs namely Mr. Avi Silver and Mr. Eddie Hirsch from Australia. United group also has many other businesses in Australia and Singapore and this is the first time, company expanded their retail petroleum business outside Australia. United is a billion-dollar company with focus on quality, safety, and environment. Owners of the company believe that they should be able to benchmark good practices to Sri Lankan retail petroleum market and enhance the quality of products and service to its customers. United is planning to upgrade and uplift the standards of retail petroleum sector in Sri Lanka with quality of Products and services. Company is assigned 150 existing fuel stations around the country and has the right of building 50 new fuel stations under the ownership of United. United Petroleum Australia has incorporated a company in Sri Lanka namely United Petroleum Lanka Pvt Ltd., to carry out the operations and former Board Member of CEYPETCO and renowned professional in petroleum industry, Dr. Prabath Samarasinghe has assigned the responsibility at the capacity of Director and CEO of the company. Mr. Dinesh Weerakkody Chairman of BOI sign on behalf of Board of Investment and Dr. Prabath Samarasinghe the CEO and Director of United Petroleum Lanka Pvt Ltd has signed the contract at the event organized by BOI Sri Lanka.
